Megacolon occurs when this constipation becomes chronic. When the stool hardens and obstructs intestinal transit, the cat is constipated. This is partly because the feces will further dehydrate as the colon continues to remove moisture from it even though it is not moving. When this healthy digestion is altered, this duration is prolonged and will worsen the longer it continues. Normal intestinal transit of a cat lasts around 12 to 24 hours between ingestion of food and elimination of feces. Liquid paraffin is used as a liquid laxative in cases of constipation or megacolon in cats. Liquid paraffin is given orally for this purpose. This facilitates intestinal transit and proper defecation without irritating the mucosa of the intestine, rectum or anus. This means the fecal matter which is passing through can better maintain its moisture. The action of liquid paraffin works by covering the intestine in hydrophobic layer that prevents it from absorbing water. Not only should you never give kerosene to a cat, you should never administer liquid paraffin without prior consultation with your veterinarian. This less-refined version is known as kerosene and is toxic if ingested, highly flammable and can even cause problems topically. It is vitally important that medicinal liquid paraffin is not confused with paraffin used as a fuel. Liquid paraffin is refined from petroleum. However, it can be sold for oral ingestion. It is more commonly an active ingredient in topical emollients which are used to relieve various skin conditions, especially dryness. It is a highly refined mineral oil which is used in medicine, as well as cosmetics for humans. If you see the signs of an allergic reaction, call your vet right away. While it may be sold under different names, liquid paraffin ( paraffinum liquidum) is a drug which is also sometimes known as Russian mineral oil. However, you should pay close attention to your cat after giving them the medication, and call your vet if you do happen to notice any adverse side effects.Īs with all medications, there’s a risk of allergic reaction and, possibly, anaphylaxis in some cats, although these are rare. There are no widely reported side effects associated with the drug. In general, laxatone is considered a mild product that’s safe for cats. This includes the length of time they recommend giving the medicine to your cat. If your vet has prescribed or recommended the drug, then you must follow their dosage and administration instructions exactly. The product’s smell should appeal to most cats and entice them to eat it. You can place the gel on your cat’s paws or nose. After that, you can decrease the dosage to somewhere between a quarter teaspoon and a half a teaspoon, given two or three times every week.
